  • The one thing that made a difference to Ashleigh’s business!

Where do you start with Ads?

Well, I mean, it, it is, there is a learning curve. So I think one of the real issues with ads and photographers or objections that I always hear is, “I tried it once. I spent $50, I really didn’t know what I was doing but I tried it, you know, and then I lost my $50 and I didn’t get anything from it so I’m never gonna do this again.” And that’s just the wrong approach because there is a learning curve, right? You do need to know what you’re doing. I don’t recommend just hitting boost on a post that’s not gonna get you anything. I just wanna caveat too – there are exceptions to every rule and every once in a while you will hear some success story of someone who boosted a post and got like some crazy amount of leads. But that’s really, really rare.
I do have free resources! I have a free guide that’s an introduction to getting started with Facebook Ads, because before you do anything – you need to understand the lingo and the terminology. But what I really like about Facebook ads is they are very methodical and there is kind of a science to it in addition to a little bit of an art – how you write your ad, which images you pair with your ad etc. But the science of it, it’s like if you just go through the method then and you just look at the numbers, you can see clearly is it performing or is it not performing?

What are the differences between Facebook & Instagram Ads?

So you know, now Facebook kind of renamed themselves Meta. So it’s used to be called the Facebook Ads Manager, I guess now it’s technically called the Meta Ads Manager. But basically you’re in your Facebook account, you go to the full ads manager and then there’s this section as you’re building your ad called placements and that’s about where is your ad going to be seen across the different platforms. So you can choose, do you only want it seen on Instagram? Do you only want it seen on Facebook? Do you want the same ad to go to both places?

Yeah, so there’s so many different strategies you can employ with advertising as well. And so that’s like another area where I think people get confused or maybe not even confused but kind of stuck on like everyone just wants leads, right? That’s like the sexy thing. That’s the thing that’s gonna make you money. But where we forget is that before you can ever get a really good lead, you need to build up your audience and you need to have trust and then you’re gonna get a better group of people that already know and like you.

It’s just really about asking yourself the questions – what is the objective here? What’s my goal? What am I trying to accomplish? And understanding that there are other things that you can accomplish with ads besides just, Hey, here’s my offer. Sign up for it, sign up for it. Which is great, but you’ll go a lot farther with that if you take some time to work on these other strategies as well.

If you could add one final piece of advice, something that’s made a difference in your personal life or your business life, what would that piece of advice be?

I would say just keep going. Cause it’s so easy to get discouraged when you’re running your own business and sometimes you can’t see the path forward, but I’ve been doing this 13 years now, which is like absolutely crazy to me. And there’s been so many points where I considered, should I do something else or should I give up? And I’m so glad that I didn’t. Sometimes you just need to start fresh in the morning, give yourself a little pep talk and just keep going cuz there’s so many amazing opportunities out there for you. You just really have to believe in your vision and yourself and that you are called to this for a reason and that you can still do it.
